MY MUSIC, MY MOMENT - MINHA MÚSICA, MEU MOMENTO

My mother Antonietta at the piano in Musical Conservatory.

My mother studied piano since childwood. She was very talented and through her life she played piano very well. I felt a great pleasure when she sat at the piano and started playing. She loved classic music, principally the Russian composers. The first time I heard Alexander Scriabin's music I was delighted, extremely impressed. Thus, since that time, whenever I hear Scriabin's music, I remember her image at the piano and I missed my mother so much...

I like to share with all of you a bit of the life and the music of Alexander Scriabin, this great Russian composer.

Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, the noted Russian composer, was born in 7 January, 1872 in Moscow and died in 14 April, 1915, in Moscow. Mystic, visionary, virtuoso, and composer, Scriabin dedicated his life to creating musical works which would, as he believed, open the portals of the spiritual world. Scriabin took piano lessons as a child, joining, in 1884, Nikolay Zverov's class, where Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943) was a fellow student. From 1888 to 1892, Scriabin studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where his teachers included Arensky, Taneyev, and Safonov. Although Scriabin's hand could not easily stretch beyond an octave, he became a prodigious pianist, launching an international concert career in 1894. Scriabin started composing during his Conservatory years. Mostly inspired by Chopin, his early works include nocturnes, mazurkas, preludes, and etudes for piano. Typical examples of Romantic music for the piano, these works nevertheless reveal the composer's strong individuality. Toward the end of the century, Scriabin started writing orchestral works, earning a solid reputation as a composer, and obtaining a professorship at the Moscow Conservatory in 1898. The development of Scriabin's voice or style can be followed in his ten piano sonatas: the earliest are in a fairly conventional late-Romantic idiom and show the influence of Chopin and Franz Liszt, but the later ones move into new territory, the last five being written with no key signature. Many passages in them can be said to be atonal.

No one was more famous during his lifetime, and few were more quickly ignored after his death. Although he was never absent from the mainstream of Russian music, the outside world neglected him until recently. Today, there is worldwide resurgence of interest in his music and ideas.

Scriabin wrote only a small number of orchestral works, including a piano concerto (1896), The Poem of Ecstasy (1908) and Prometheus: The Poem of Fire (1910).

A hypochondriac his entire life, Scriabin died in Moscow from septicemia. For some time before his death he had planned a multi-media work, to be performed in the Himalayas. This piece, Mysterium, was never realized.

Immediately upon Scriabin's sudden death, Sergey Rachmaninov toured Russia in a series of all-Scriabin recitals. It was the first time he played music other than his own in public.

"The carnival is a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus and public street party, generally during the carnival season. It usually includes that people dress up / masquerade during the celebrations. An important part of the Brazilian Carnival takes place in Rio de Janeiro, with samba schools. These are large, social entities with thousands of members and a theme each year. Blocos are small informal groups also with a definite theme, usually satirical of the current political situation, and bandas are samba musical bands usually formed by enthusiasts in the same neighborhood.

From Salvador, Bahia another form of the Brazilian Carnival, the Trio Elétrico, has spread throughout the country. A trio elétrico is an adapted truck, with giant speakers and a platform where musicians play songs of local genres such as Axé music and Maracatu. The truck is driven around the city with the crowd following dancing and singing. It was originally staged by three Salvador musicians, Armandinho, Dodo & Osmar in the decade of 1950. Pernambuco has large Carnival celebrations, including the frevo, typical Pernambuco music."
