2008 Los Angeles Auto Show: Extreme Concept Designs

Los Angeles, America — The end of the year is always a busy time for automakers: it's motor show season. In the last month we've had this year's biggest motor show, Paris, and no more than a week later the Australian International Motor Show bobbed up. Now it's time for America to have it's last big show for the year with the LA Motor Show, before we move to Detroit early in 2009. Along with the usual range of new cars and products, the 2008 Los Angeles Motor Show will also be home to some wild new concept designs, which you can read about below. Every year the L.A. Auto Show is host to a design competition, and this year's theme is "Motor Sports vehicle for 2025". Because Los Angeles has one of highest concentrations of auto design studios on the globe, some of the designers have gone all out in 2008: Mitsubishi Motors MMR25 This concept car is one of the wildest designs we've ever seen here at the Motoring Channel, first and foremost because of its running gear. The Mitsubishi MMR25 features bizarre-looking wheels, if you could call them that. Half-way between a combine harvester's blades and Michelin's conceptual Tweel, these rubber coated 'blade' structures give the MMR25 the kind of go-anywhere ability that most 4WDs would die for. As the photos show, snow and sand are no obstacle for this design concept which is purpose built for both tarmac and off-road surfaces. Mitsubishi calls the MMR25 an 8x4 wheel drive vehicle. The 'bladed' wheels are omni-directional, which means the car can be facing one direction and moving in another. Would it need two steering wheels? Mitsubishi's designers say this form of motion can aid the vehicle on race tracks because it can be perfectly aligned for corner exits before passing the apex, which is an interesting idea. This concept vehicle has also got a number of rally racing options available to it and who knows? We could be seeing cars like this racing around in 2025 [it's doubtful - Ed]. Engine type is unknown, but is expected to be cold fusion or hydrogen powered which would give the car an explosive turn of speed with almost zero CO2 emissions. It's also unknown where the driver and/or passengers sit, because the body appears to have been a design of form over function. However there are two small slits either side of the central snout that could be viewing portals. The front and rear suspension struts are aerodynamically designed, in essence performing two jobs. As well as suspending the car and reducing surface impact, the suspension struts are quasi front and rear aero aids, acting like spoilers or wings to improve downforce and tyre blade grip.

2007 Suzuki GSXR 600s Support Extreme Tandem Motorcycle Freestyle Riders

Rome Charpentier and Randie Liberatore have taken the world of extreme tandem motorcycle freestyle entertainment and made it their full time jobs. Also known as Rome and Randie 2 Up, the couple travel the world on someone else’s dime to put on extreme stunt shows. By the way 2 Up, stands for two people on one wheelie. 2007 Suzuki GSXR 600 holds Rome and Randie 2 up Rome is 22-years-old and Randie is about to turn 21. They go to bike parties, concerts and races to show off their coordination and style. “My favorite stunt is the hawk dragger,” said Randie. “It’s where I scrape my helmet on the ground in a wheelie. Rome’s is our tandem combo stunt.” Tandem combo is synchronized riding where Rome and Randie match their stunts on the same wheelie. Rome and Randie 2 up enter national motorcycle stunt competitions on their 2007 Suzuki GSXR 600s The San Diego, California residents started out performing for adrenaline junkies and thrill seekers. They did stunts for fun and before they knew it, people started hiring them for different events. Three years later their calendar is very busy. Rome and Randie 2 Up also compete nationally. Rome and Randie are also into stability. They have matching 2007 Suzuki GSXR 600s. “Our bikes are solid and smooth,” said Randie. “If they drop, they don’t break. Our bikes also handle very well.” The athletic couple use K&N Engineering products on their motorcycles. “We travel a lot and can be in dusty conditions one day and high elevations on the next day,” said Randie. “Our bikes run smoothly with K&N air filters, we also notice additional performance. K&N really makes a difference.” Their next gig is to wow the crowds at the musicians Anthem Tour in Southern California. “Our passion is having fun,” said Randie.

2009 BMW M3 ALMS Race Car

BMW presented the racing version of the new BMW M3 at the Chicago Auto Show. Powered by a 485 bhp eight cylinder engine, this impressive race car has been designed to compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) beginning in 2009. The car is based on the fourth generation of the BMW M3, the high-performance sports car produced by BMW M GmbH.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen says: "With the sporting genes of the production BMW M3 being clearly evident, developing a racing version of the car was the next logical step. The fact that the road-going vehicle is fitted with a V8 engine as standard provided us with an ideal base. However, the BMW M3 is more than a race car, it has achieved legendary status amongst race fans across the globe. I am convinced that this unique story of the BMW M3 racing cars will now be expanded upon by the addition of further chapters."

BMW's 2009 entry into the American Le Mans Series will be driven by a partnership between BMW of North America, LLC and Rahal Letterman Racing, co-owned by US motorsport legend Bobby Rahal.

BMW M3 ALMS Race Car 2009"We are very pleased to be returning to the American Le Mans Series with our latest generation BMW M3," states Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW of North America. "Sports car racing has been part of BMW of North America's history practically from day one. Just two weeks after the company was incorporated in March 1975, a BMW CSL won the Twelve Hours of Sebring. We are confident that the fourth generation M3 will continue the legacy of its two predecessors which combined to win six manufacturer's championships over nine seasons in US sports car racing. As it has been in the past we believe the ALMS is the ideal venue to showcase the potential of the newest BMW M3."

Echoing that sentiment Bobby Rahal adds, "BMW has an illustrious racing heritage. Rahal Letterman Racing is eagerly anticipating, not only becoming part of that heritage, but helping to enhance it. Our dedication to this project will be without equal and we look forward to racing at the front of the grid with BMW in the years to come."

Martin Birkmann, Motorsports Manager, BMW of North America, adds: "We are very excited to announce our return to the American Le Mans Series with the 4th generation M3 at the same time as the road car hits the BMW showrooms. We are also excited about our partnership with Rahal Letterman Racing. The ALMS offers racing where we can compete against the finest and most renowned automotive brands from Europe and the US. Motorsport is deeply ingrained in the BMW DNA and we are pleased to partner with an organization which shares that same heritage. Rahal Letterman Racing is the perfect partner to be behind the wheel of our new BMW M3 racing effort."

Aerodynamics In Car Racing

Aerodynamic efficiency is the goal of all race car designers. It is the most important element in developing a competitive race car.
